What is Love?
Howard Jones
When I was in elementary school, I told the other kids Santa Claus didn’t exist. “It’s your parents!” When I was a freshman in college, I told the other kids there is no such thing as love. I said something like, “Whatever it is you’re calling love is really self-interest pretending to be altruism.” My reasoning then was that as animals we are incapable of acting in any way that isn’t, in some way, a survival instinct.
It still makes sense to me. Only God has the ability to love in a way that is without taint of some self-preserving motivation; after all He is God, he isn’t worried about preserving himself. I’ve written about God’s extraordinary love. But can love be measured? And is something approaching love possible between people? If it isn’t or at least if it isn’t for me, what’s the point in entertaining adding a measure that will read, Zero? I’m still trying to answer that question.
