In Canto IV of the Inferno, Dante gets caught up with the philosophers who were not baptized by who were virtuous. The idea here is that the academic party is a distraction for both of our protagonists. Lots of smart but lost people. One can also remember the song Garden Party by Ricky Nelson and get the same idea.
