Jean-François de Troy, 1742
It was then that I saw you, then that I began to know you, then that came the first step of my soul’s downfall.
Ovid, Heroides
Medea to Jason
Would Medea’s downfall have been prevented by her not knowing Jason? Was her exertion of will based on knowledge?
We don’t know anyone. The expectation that people will behave rationally is too high. Blaming knowledge or lack of it for bad decisions assumes a connection between knowledge and the will. There isn’t one.
People aren’t rational. Knowing doesn’t change action. People will choose a path contrary to what knowledge has mapped.
