I’m sure you got some things
You’d like to change about yourself
But when it comes to me
I wouldn’t want to be anybody else
Selena Gomez
There’s more than one song about respect, which I find encouraging. Giving and receiving respect is as deep a need as wanting to be loved. One thing about the Respect measure is that is dependent on a relationship with others. Epictetus, the stoic philosopher, might discount it because it isn’t something I have any control over; even if I deserve it, it doesn’t mean someone else will give it. And if I give it, will it be received and appreciated?
It is a rare thing, getting and giving respect, and it requires an embrace one’s self but not in a solipsistic or aggrandizing way. It might be as simple as that self-belief, self-awareness, self-respect begets respect from others. Respect is also about trust in another’s integrity; they will do what’s right no matter the consequences. Respect is due a person who wouldn’t want to be anyone else, and is prepared to live out the results of that without any fear. If I can see that in myself, I can recognize it in others.
